Native to Portland, Oregon Sam is passionate about leading all people to live a sustainable, strong, healthy lifestyle. His 10+ years of coaching experience as well as personally competing in the CrossFit Games, USAW Weightlifting Nationals, and numerous sports give him a unique perspective to help Athletes reach their Goals. His prior experience as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force also gives him a unique perspective to help prospective military members train to be mentally and physically prepared for service. While he's not coaching, he enjoys studying ways to improve his methods to ensure all people he works with receive the best strength and conditioning program possible. No matter who you are or what you do, Sam believes Strength is for you.

1. Why do you train?

A: I train because I love the feeling of pushing through discomfort.  It is a feeling of accomplishment and a way to practice for life.  Whenever life has gotten tough, I turn to training, whether for myself or for others.  I love coaching others and helping them develop that outlet for their lives.  When we train our bodies, our minds become stronger.  By pushing ourselves to move with purpose, we can translate work ethic and consistency into our daily lives.

2. If there is one exercise that everyone should do, what is it?

A: If I have to choose one exercise for Everyone, it is the plank.  Even babies start to plank before they get up, they move around on their hands and knees, this is a basic human movement that develops core strength and coordination.  Everyone should plank every day!

3. How do you balance your nutrition and your exercise?

A:  My typical day is filled with movement and exercise at StrengthFarm. Because of this it helps me a lot that equipment and the people that show up to train each day give me the inspiration I need when I'm having a hard time motivating myself. But when I was in the military working 12-15 hour days, 4-6 days per week, I’d train either before or after my work day, non-negotiable.  It helped me feel better and even though some days were harder than others, I always felt accomplished after training.  Nutrition wise, I stick to a lot of greens (kale, spinach, celery, broccoli, spirulina, etc) ,fruits (banana, apple, orange, lemon, and cranberries), lean protein (salmon, tuna, bison, beef, turkey, etc), complex carbohydrates (rice, potatoes, pasta, etc), and a lot of water.

4. What is one thing that not everyone knows about you but would surprise them?

A: Not many people know that one of my favorite things to do is read.  Also, that I started really getting into studying fitness, nutrition, and mental strength while in Afghanistan at age 21.  .

5. What’s your favorite quote/ mantra?

A:  Never Give Up
